Fifteen minutes later, they were sitting on the beach, stuffing their faces with hot fish and chips, but without the fish for Ella. Hannah had drenched hers with salt and vinegar, and the smell of it appeared to be attracting all the birds nearby.
Hannah eyed them suspiciously. âIs this your doing, Magic Girl?â She munched on a massive piece of fish as she spoke. âBilly said the insects and animals have been behaving oddly around you.â
Ella threw a few chips into the sand and the gulls flew towards them.
âI told you, Purple Girl, itâs not magic.â
The birds fought over the food as Hannah spoke.
âOkay, itâs all to do with Elementals and the Light, and youâre the special girl who controls it all.â
Ella sighed. âThat will do for now. So tell me what you found out about the Venus card.â
Hannah finished her grub and looked ready to throw the plastic container into the sand until Ella scowled at her. Instead, she dropped it into Billyâs lap.
âWell, I had to delve into the dark web first. Do you know what that is?â
âSure,â Billy said. âItâs what me ma is always warning me about.â
Ella laughed. âAnd your ma is right because itâs where criminals and dodgy people go to do their dodgy deals.â
âItâs more than that,â Hannah said. âThrough the dark web, private computer networks can communicate and conduct business anonymously without divulging identifying details, such as a userâs location. And that means itâs a place where hackers like me can connect with other hackers to get the information I canât.â
Ella removed the VENUS card from her pocket. âSo you used the dark web to discover what this is?â
Billy stuck a greasy chip into his mouth. âShe hasnât told me yet, but I bet itâs to do with ancient aliens.â
âAncient aliens?â Ella said.
Billyâs eyes sparkled as he spoke. âYou know that ETs came to Earth thousands of years ago and built the pyramids and stuff.â
Hannah reached out her hand and pushed her cousin into the sand.
âDonât be daft, ya silly bugger. Aliens donât exist, and even if they did, why would they waste their time with our spawny species?â
Billy brushed himself down, but didnât answer her.
âWhat did you discover?â Ella said.
âWell,â Hannah said, âI used the photo the daft bugger took of the VENUS card and shared it with some of my colleagues on the dark web. The ten dots and the numbers on the card appear to be security codes to enter a system or a building. And it looks like VENUS is the name of the person the card belongs to.â
Ella kicked her feet into the sand. âIâd already guessed all that.â
Hannah waved a finger at her. âIs that so, little grasshopper? Did you also guess where the building which the card gets you into is?â
Ellaâs lips trembled. âNo.â
âWell, I found out.â Hannah stood and pointed. âItâs somewhere over there.â
âThatâs the old steelworks,â Billy said.
Ella got up and looked at where she was pointing.
âAnd thatâs where Iâm going.â
