Chapter 11

Over the next month, Jane and Elizabeth visited Georgiana almost every other day. They always waited to be invited, but inevitably, at the end of every visit, Georgiana would invite them back in two or three days.

Both sisters were pleased to have a new friend, but Elizabeth was especially glad. There was something in her manner and facial expressions that reminded Elizabeth of Mr. Darcy, which made the young lady particularly easy to read. This, in turn, made Elizabeth more comfortable in her presence, despite their differences in status and age, because Elizabeth could tell that Georgiana genuinely liked both her and Jane.

The visits were always at least an hour in length, though sometimes they extended beyond that. Georgiana was kind enough to let Elizabeth practice on the piano occasionally, and the two of them sometimes worked on a simple duet together.

Before her father’s death, Elizabeth had loved playing piano, but when she moved to Gracechurch Street, she could not continue the hobby. The Gardiner’s home was quite elegant for its location, but there simply was not space for such a large instrument.

What Elizabeth had not neglected over the years was singing. Even without a musical instrument, the Gardiners would often ask Elizabeth to entertain them with songs in the evening. Sometimes, they and Jane would join in. Other times, Elizabeth would sing solo. She had to be careful with her choice of song, however. Elizabeth’s voice was distinctly alto, and any time she reached for too high a note it became shrill and piercing. She knew her range, and she assiduously stayed within it.

Once Georgiana discovered Elizabeth’s talent for singing, she often played while Elizabeth sang. Jane listened with clear enjoyment and applauded and praised every song, even if it was simply a practice song.
