Chapter 16: Darcyâs Call
When Darcy showed up at Lady Valerieâs townhouse the following Monday, he was not alone - Georgiana was with him. They were shown into the parlor, where the four women of the house were sitting, awaiting him.
âGood day, Mr. Darcyâ said Lady Valerie, âwe did not know you were bringing your sister with you on this call.â
âIt was not in my original plans, Lady Valerie, but as I prepared to leave, Georgiana decided to ask me if she could come along and perhaps, she and Kitty could be our chaperones if we wanted to go somewhere â for a walk or, as they suggested, to the British Museum. We have not been there in years.â
âAnd if I decided that would not be appropriate?â asked Elizabeth.
âThen I could either have the driver return Georgiana to Darcy House and bring the smaller carriage back for me or I could leave her here to spend time with Kitty.â
Elizabeth looked at Lady Valerie. âWhat do you think, Lady Valerie, would it be unwise to be seen in public with him since he is only calling on me.â
As Lady Valerie thought about it, Clarissa said, âHow about if I go with them also? Then she is with me and the girls, and Mr. Darcy is just escorting all of us. The fact that they are usually together and slightly apart from us should not be noticed. No one need know that he is calling on her.â
âI think that is a brilliant idea,â said Darcy. âWhat do you think, Miss Elizabeth?â
Elizabeth knew that Clarissa had an ulterior motive for wanting to go along. She wanted to spend some time with Kitty, her new half-sister, which Elizabeth thought was entirely appropriate; therefore, she said, âI agree; however, I believe Clarissa and I need to change if we are going out and to the museum. We would need walking dresses. Come, Clarissa, let us change into dresses. We will return shortly.â
âWait for me,â said Lady Valerie. âMr. Darcy, I hope you do not mind, but as long as you are willing to escort four women to the museum, it might as well be five. I truly would like to go, and with me along, surely anyone who sees us will think it is just an outing for which you were willing to escort us.â
Before three oâclock, the six of them were entering the British Museum, with Darcy having Lady Valerie on his arm. However, shortly after starting into the first of the exhibits, Darcy and Elizabeth started lagging behind the group, although staying close enough it could be seen they were part of the group.
âI must say,â said Elizabeth, âyou do not impress me as one who would usually be found in the company of five women at any venue. Have you ever done such a thing before?â
âNever with five, but on several occasions, I have escorted Georgiana, Alicia, and Aunt Helen to some venue or event, and, in fact, one of the venues to
