Chapter 4

Lochlan lay quietly atop the roof of a two-story house. He looked around him, at the other roofs and gables of the abandoned village and made sure his troops were in place. He saw his squad leader Tone signal from the far edge of town that the Carran army was in sight. Lochlan tensed, waiting for the battle to begin.

His scouts had come back early that morning and reported that the Carran army was heading straight for the poor village of Aktal, north of Whiterock. Immediately he ordered the evacuation of the few remaining residents, the town itself already half abandoned due to lack of resources and distance from trade routes. Once the residents were clear, his army had moved in, taking up positions on rooftops, in houses, and in the trees beyond. He felt confident about their position, but they still lacked the numbers.

Scouts reported that the portion of the Carran army heading their way numbered at least a thousand, that was almost two to one against their six hundred or so men and women. Lochlan had chosen carefully among his army, choosing the strongest and best trained, leaving the rest behind. He'd left Estrid behind, taking only Willem as his second in command.

The sun beat down warm on his back, the first time it had truly felt like summer was approaching. Just when he was about to signal a second look, he heard a clash of weapons, and the boom of a fireball exploding.

This is it.

Willem was lying on the roof a few feet away, his green eyes wide with anticipation. Lochlan wondered if the older man felt as much fear as he did. Lochlan knew that down below him, hidden in the house, was Reynir, all six feet tall of his enormous direwolf form, waiting to attack any Carran soldiers who got too close. He had Reynir to protect him.

Another boom and shaking of fire and stone came from closer in, and now Lochlan could see the edges of the fighting, the WindDancers and EarthMovers he'd placed atop the houses showering rocks down on their enemies, and the FireWalkers and WaterWorkers fighting in close combat. A wave of water splashed down one street, while a wall of fire roared down another, engulfing a group of soldiers trapped between the narrow streets of the houses.

The trouble was, Skaetan houses were mostly constructed of timber and thatching, and despite the WaterWorker’s and WindDancer's best efforts, the Carran army was systematically burning down the houses, forcing the rebels to retreat. Lochlan watched in growing anger and fear as the fighting drew closer and closer, now a few blocks away.

"We should get you out of here," Willem said, watching as Lasya and Vasco used their WindDancing power from a nearby rooftop to send cyclones spiraling down the streets. "It's not safe here."

Lochlan clenched his jaw, determined to stick it out. A part of him wanted to flee, to run and keep himself and Reynir safe. A part of him wanted
