Using Sculpture to Discuss Ideas

Since sculpting requires a great deal of physical strength, it is one of the most difficult of the fine arts. For sculptors, tasks such as cutting marble posed challenges, but assistants could offset some of these issues.

Sculpture is not only difficult because of the strength it requires but also because it’s not easy to correct mistakes. When errors are made, the sculptor simply has to keep going. But the artform also has its advantages. Artists can use it to express concepts, or ideas. In Forever Free, for instance, Edmonia Lewis used sculpture to show the deep feelings of appreciation African Americans had after getting their freedom. While a painting can certainly capture emotion as well, the flatness of canvas prevents it from expressing feeling in the three-dimensional way that sculpture can.
