Chapter 17

For the first time in weeks, classes felt somewhat normal. I made it through the day without embarrassing myself with my inability to control my magic, and I even made progress with the Earth group in the grove of trees. I was pretty confident we were going to save most of them.

So when I saw Hannah’s teary eyes and the stern expressions on the faces of my friends and the guys, I almost walked out of the dining hall without eating.

One day. I just wanted one day without problems. Was that too much? Apparently.

I sat down with my tray of chicken tenders, but my appetite was quickly fading. “What happened?”

Hannah wiped her eyes and leaned into Daniel. “People are just being mean.”

Who would be mean to her and why? Everyone liked Hannah. Granted, I mostly kept to our small group since arriving, even so, I saw how people treated her in class.

Sai was the first to jump in. “There’s talk going around. The Council issued a statement yesterday, cautioning against interspecies breeding. It was nothing new, but it’s brought out the prejudices all over again.”

I could feel eyes on our table, and I glanced over my shoulder and into several pairs of staring eyes. I glared back before turning around. “So our group of misfits is drawing attention?”

“You could say that,” Daniel narrowed his eyes and pulled Hannah even closer.

“People have been whispering and staring all day,” Malik explained. “Someone called Hannah names and . . .”

“And?” I demanded.

“And you,” Theo finished. “People have noticed you spending time with us. They can’t figure out who you’re with, so they’re calling you names.”

A bunch of strangers’ opinions didn’t matter to me, but I hated that Hannah was taking it personally.

“You can’t listen to them, Hannah.”

She sniffed. “It’s not what they’re saying. I’m scared.”

I straightened. “Of what?”

“Of the Councilmember finding out about me and Daniel. Or you guys. I’m scared he’ll do something to keep us apart.”

“It’s not officially against the law, right? It’s just frowned upon?” I couldn’t remember if anyone had ever told me.

“No, there wasn’t enough support within the Council to pass the law. But that was back before our parents were in school. They could try again. Theo looked even more stressed than he’d been after telling us about the meeting with George.

“Shifter slut,” a girl muttered as she passed our table.

I snapped my head in her direction. “Excuse me?”

She glared at me then Hannah. “She knows what she is.”

“How dare you.” I started to stand, but Theo pulled me back down.

“We can’t make a scene.”

“Yeah, just let it go,” Hannah said with a sigh. “It’s not worth getting in trouble. Plus, most teachers would take her side.”

This whole situation was ridiculous. Completely unbelievable. How could there still be segregation in the supernatural society?

“The best thing to do right now is to keep our heads down and stay out of trouble. As long as we don’t draw attention to ourselves, the Councilmember won’t have reason to look twice.
