Japanese Knotweed ( Reynoutria japonica var. japonica) a.k.a. Mexican Bamboo

Native to eastern Asia, Japanese knotweed was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental and erosion-control plant and was judged an immediate success. Too successful, it turned out. The plant can spread along roadsides and riverbanks, and displace native vegetation wherever it takes root. It makes the top-one hundred list of the world’s most invasive species.

A member of the buckwheat family, Japanese knotweed has hollow, smooth, jointed stems. Purplish when the stalks first emerge in early spring, they eventual y turn green with red flecks. They grow astonishingly quickly, shooting up as much as eight centimetres a day and reaching a height of one to three metres over the course of the summer. The stems die back to the ground in fal , only to sprout up the following spring.

No one wants a patch of this plant on their property. If you do have this plant, you might want to research ways to eradicate it before it spreads any further. However, this is a book on wild edibles, so while you’re eradicating this noisome plant, why not snack on it too?
