Conclusion

Although the British East India Company was effectively ended in 1857 after the Indian Rebellion, its legacy was felt for a very long time afterward. While the company no longer had a presence in India, Britain certainly did. After 1857, the British government took over the roles that had been filled by the company, and India was officially colonized. The British military took over the East India Company’s military force, and many company employees became employees of the Crown instead.

Without the East India Company and the inroads they’d made in India, it is doubtful that Great Britain would have gained control over the subcontinent as they did; Great Britain would be a colonial power of India well into the twentieth century, until after World War II. What is more, the East India Company established trade and agricultural practices that had long-lasting and sometimes devastating effects in India. Even today, India lives with its British legacy, for better or for worse. Because none of it would have been possible without the conquests made by the East India Company in the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, the impact of the East India Company is almost incalculable.
