London, England

There’s flying . . .

Then there’s teaching someone else to fly.

I lean against a wall in our flat, watching Claire and Lily at the kitchen table. Claire’s shoulders hunch under her soft blue jacket, a stark contrast to Lily’s confident posture as the tribal princess lounges in wild, brightly colored dress.

“So, flying is just half of the equation? Ben also will need to guide us to . . .” Claire hesitates for a moment. “To Neverland?”

Lily smiles lightly. “Exactly. Navigating the stars is far harder than you’d expect. I don’t even know how to retrace our steps back, not that I’ve been to Earth very often anyway. And certainly never this long.”

Claire’s head dips in understanding. “So I’ll need to figure out how to fly, and then Ben leads the way.”

“Aye, pretty much.” I quip.

It’s been a day since the Lost Boys attacked Claire in her flat, and yet I’m still no closer to puzzling this flying thing out.

I can vaguely remember teaching Wendy. Faint images lurk in my mind’s eye of watching her faltering and falling and tiptoeing across her ceiling. Of her brothers breaking a bed trying to jump high enough to soar. Of the dog—what was that mutt’s name again?—straining against its tether to join us off the ground.

There’s just one thing I can’t quite put my finger on.

The flying bit.

Good gad, it’s like a horrible joke. Peter Pan forgetting how to fly.

Lily is never hearing about this.

I glare at the flat’s high, arched ceilings. It’s like the building is mocking me. With a sigh, I go back to observing the girls seated at the table with mugs in their hands. Claire takes a little sip, her brows rising.

“Mmm. This is different than anything I’ve tasted before. But it’s probably a staple in U.K. cupboards, right?”

I muffle a snort. Try, otherworldly.

Lily stretches back in her seat, hands wrapped around her cup. “They’re actually herbs from Neverland. I get batches now and then from Tansy, Jeremy’s wife. She was our tribe’s healer in Neverland, and we’ve kept up a bit since I arrived here.”

I blow out a long breath. How she can be almost chummy with the Guardian’s wife is beyond me.

Ignoring my sour look, Lily finishes her explanation. “Tansy brought a collection of herbs when she moved to London with the Guardian. Though it broke his own rules to do so.”

Claire’s cup stops in midair. “Ah, that’s right. I knew he was married, but didn’t expect . . .” She pauses. “He must have loved her a lot to defy his own code like that. It’s got to be quite the story.”

“You have no idea.” Lily says. She puts her own cup down. “Anyway, how are you feeling?”

Claire pushes back one of her blue jacket sleeves, showing a hint of purple swelling on her wrist. “A little bruised, but fine.”

Lily smiles, then glances at me, then back to Claire. “Are you ready to learn how to fly?”

Blast! I’ve taught scores of people to fly—Lost Boys, Darling children, a few rambunctious tribal boys.
