Chapter 19

He’s wearing a black, down-filled vest over a long-sleeved gray T-shirt, jeans, and hiking boots. His dark hair is damp and his cheeks are pink like he just finished shaving.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I ask.

He gives me that irritating smirk, which just raises my hackles even more.

“You really are stalking me, aren’t you?” I say. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

“I’m not stalking you,” he says.

“Bullshit,” I tell him. “What is wrong with you? First you listen in on my phone call, now you follow me up here and onto the boat?”

“You’ve got it all wrong.”

I start to tell him that I’m pretty sure I don’t have anything wrong when Sunny emerges at the top of the steps.

And she’s carrying three coffees.

Three.

My jaw drops as she walks towards us, then hands one of the coffees to her brother. She holds one out to me and I glare at her before finally reaching up and take it.

“I told him,” Sunny says. She’s staring at me, almost defiantly, as if she’s daring me to challenge her on it. “I told him we were coming up here and going to the island.”

I look at Dylan.

He smirks again, then takes a sip from the coffee.

I swallow down the rage bubbling up inside of me. “Why?” I manage to ask.

“I think we need him,” she says simply. “I think he can help.”

I’m still trying not to blow the fuck up.

“Dylan used to camp with us, too,” she continues. “He knows the island better than I do. And he knows Trevor. If he’s on Catalina, Dylan is probably better equipped to find him than we are.”

I stare at them both for a long moment, then fix my stare on him. “So do you know?”

“Do I know what?’

“Don’t fuck around with me right now,” I growl, lowering my voice. “Do you know the whole story?”

He looks at his sister.

“He knows,” Sunny says. “I told him everything last night.”

My hands clench into fists. “That wasn’t part of the deal. We weren’t supposed to tell anyone, Sunny.”

“Oh?” She glares at me. “Funny hearing you say that, considering you blabbed the whole fucking story to your friends.”

I stiffen.

“Relax,” Dylan says, holding up a hand. “I’m not the enemy here. None of us are.”

“I don’t care who you are,” I snap, then look at Sunny. “You didn’t tell me anything about this. I promised you I’d follow through, but you didn’t tell me about him coming along or that you were telling him anything.” I shake my head. “Deal’s off.”

“He can help us,” she says evenly. “Trust me, if anyone has issues with Dylan, it’s me. But I think he can help us here.”

“We agreed not to tell anyone what was happening,” I remind her. “Anyone else,” I amend. “That was the deal.”

“What exactly are you afraid of?” Dylan asks. “What do you think I’m going to do here?”

I whip around to face him. “I wasn’t talking to you.”

“Well, I’m talking to you.” His voice is like ice.
