Chapter Eleven

Rhys couldn’t take his eyes off his brother’s wife as she rallied the troops. Boudica’s voice carried clear to his ears.

“We outnumber them; even now they want to run. They fear the fierce sound of our war cries and carnyxs, our charge and our blows will frighten them even more. We battle the most powerful army in the world and if we lose they will enslave us. We must conquer or die. As a woman, it is what I will do. As for you men, you may live and be slaves.”

If any man had thought of fleeing the battle, the queen’s words now keep them from it. As for fighting, it has been a while since my warrior training when I was but thirteen years of age.

Rhys rubbed his forehead. I hunt with spears, so I am more able than these three women. Rather one woman and two girls in my chariot. I have three females to protect. I may serve them better as a stag. I could ram the Romans with my antlers if it comes to that. I may well transform, but for now I need a spear. Turning to Sulwen, he tried to ignore her up-tilted breast and curved hips. When he gazed at her large green eyes, he read the silent question, What do we do now? “All will be well.” Rhys ran his fingers down her silky hair, which hung like a drape of mist about her radiant face. He flashed a comforting smile. “I am going to get a weapon. I shall return shortly.”

He walked over to the four spearmen who guarded Sulwen as they sat atop their mounts just behind her chariot. He nodded to Cadell. “Are you ready for battle?”

“Yes, Oak Seer, we shall free Britannia of the Roman threat this day.”

“Yes, that we will.” Rhys relaxed and his face broke into a smile. Cadell’s confidence took a weight off Rhys’ shoulders. Sulwen’s worries had affected him more than he realized. It is good to speak with a man of battle. Women make everything hard. “I need three spears. Who should I see?”

Cadell jerked his head toward a small, dark-headed man who handed out spears to young warriors fighting on foot.

Knowing the man, Rhys walked up to him and gave him a hearty pat on the back. “Owain, I need a spear, and two for the princesses as well.”

“Yes.” He handed the weapons to the druid. “Good ash spears, they will serve you well.”

“My thanks.” Rhys gazed at the iron tips. “These will work well.”

Owain swiped at the sweat on his forehead and then leaned against a spear. “Do you not want another for the druidess to use?”

“No, Sulwen is driving the chariot. She will have her hands upon the reins.”

“The druidess is your charioteer?” Owain’s red brows arched.

“Yes, she has a way with horses.” She has a way with me, as well. “May the gods be with you.”

“My thanks for the blessing, Oak Seer,” Owain gave a slight nod of his head, then turned and handed out the last spear.
