Chapter 15

“Hey, man. How’s Rebecca doing?” Jack asked as soon as he answered.

Nolan scratched the back of his neck, the image of Rebecca’s scared face ingrained in his mind. “She’s better now that Lauren’s here. Went through quite the ordeal last night. She’s lucky she made it out alive.”

“I got the highlights from Officer Jeffery.”

“Glad to hear it. She does good work. Has she found out who the vehicle is registered to?” He rubbed the sole of his shoe against the floor.

“A guy named Timothy Troth. Claims the car was stolen yesterday morning, or at least that’s when he noticed it was missing.”

A dull thud pulsed against the center of Nolan’s forehead. Another name to add to the mix. “Where had he parked his car?”

“A garage a few blocks from his place, which was pretty damn close to Lauren’s apartment.”

Nolan blew out a long breath. “Probably swiped the car while casing the building. Had a plan for grabbing Lauren but changed his mind and took her roommate when the opportunity presented itself. Any connections between Troth and Malcom Carson?”

“None that I’ve found. I might be missing something, but I already asked for security footage from the garage to check Timothy’s story. Let’s see if Malcom makes an appearance.”

Guilt tightened his shoulders. He should have been the one to talk to Officer Jeffery about the vehicle registration. He should have known about the stolen car and requested the footage. Instead, he was sitting at the hospital. He could spin the story in his mind that he needed Rebecca’s statement and was working to get an officer stationed at her door in case her kidnapper was still out there. But he’d be lying.

He was here because of Lauren. She drew him to her like a magnet. One of those heavy-duty ones that was useless to fight against. He had to do something to sever that connection, to get out of range of this hold she had over him.

“Learning the key to Malcom’s death is crucial to every other piece of this puzzle. It’s possible he grabbed Rebecca and died before he finished whatever he intended to do with her. If that’s the case, searching for any other criminal is just chasing our own damn tails.”

“Agreed,” Jack said. “But we both know how long autopsies can take.”

“Then I might have to pay the morgue a little visit. See who’s in charge of Malcom’s examination and find out if there’s any way to grease the wheels a little.”

“Good luck. If you need me there, just ask.”

“You’ve done plenty, but I’ll be in touch.” He disconnected then called the station to secure an officer for the night outside Rebecca’s room. Too many questions remained unanswered. He couldn’t risk Rebecca’s safety if the man who’d almost killed her was still out there, pissed that the woman he’d taken had escaped.

With everything in place, he ventured inside the room.

Lauren swiveled to face him, her blue eyes bloodshot and nose red. She sniffed back tears and forced a smile.
