Small beginnings
Beer has been in Japan for about 400 years. During the Edo period (1603–1868), Dutch merchants first imported and then started to brew beer themselves at their trading post in Nagasaki. They even presented some to the Shogun in 1724. As far as the average Japanese punter was concerned, however, beer really got its start with the modernization of the country in the late 19th century. Some of the Japanese representatives who dealt with the American “Black Ships” in the 1850s were treated to beer during the negotiations and, shortly afterwards, the father of Japanese chemistry, Kōmin Kawamoto, became the first Japanese to make his own beer. He used an improvized setup in his back garden. His brewing method was published in a textbook in 1860.
