Chapter Seventeen

“It’s a trap. It has to be!” The Lost Boys had argued throughout the entire walk back to the treehouse, but still they weren’t done. “What could they possibly want with Hook’s hook?” Curly continued.

“Nothing,” said the twins. “It’s a trap.”

“They think it’s a trap,” Slightly qualified. “But we can totally get it. It’ll be fun!”

“And begin an all-out war with the pirates? Again?” asked Tootles, shuddering. “It’s not

worth it.”

“Of course it is!” said Nina. “What did you think the Shadowthieves were going to ask for, a flower bouquet? A homecooked meal?”

“That’s what I’d want,” muttered Tootles.

“We knew we’d walk away from the talk today with a challenge. Now, we’ve got it. We’re not debating whether or not to get Hook’s hook, we just need to figure out how to get it. Right?” Nina looked around for support. “Peter?”

Peter laid sprawled out as though he was in one of the hammocks, but instead, he was floating mid-air. “I don’t know, Nina. I think Curly’s got a point.”

“Ha!” Curly jabbed a figure at Nina.

“Shut up,” said Nibs, putting his arm around Nina’s shoulders. Nina was too fired up to notice.

“What, so that’s it? Our dreams aren’t worth a simple trade?”

“I didn’t say that, not yet,” said Peter. “But we should think it through.”

“The Shadowthieves could undoubtedly get Hook’s hook for themselves,” said Curly.

“You made it sound like they could get anything for themselves,” said Perry.

“Right, they can,” said Slightly. “It’s just a matter of convenience for us to do their dirty work for them. And more adventure for us!”

“But that’s what I’m saying. It might not even be a matter of convenience,” said Curly.

“What does that even mean?” said Nina.

“It means,” Curly paused, taking a deep breath to keep from snapping at Nina. “It means I think they don’t even want Hook’s hook. We’re not just running their errands.”

“Then why did they ask--”

“The Shadowthieves live to stir up trouble. They didn’t pick a task they needed done. They picked the mission that will create the most strife in Neverland,” Curly sighed. “Us versus Hook.”

“Like the old days,” Peter nodded. “Curly, I think you’re definitely right.”

“So we’re playing right into their hand,” said Curly.

“Well of course we are,” said Nina. “They have all the power here. We showed up at their front door and said we’d do whatever they say to get our dreams back. This shouldn’t come as a shock,” Nina paused, wringing her hands. “The question is, is it worth it?”

No one said anything for a long time. The hours of arguing finally boiled down to this simple question. Finally, it was Allie who spoke up. “Let’s vote.”
