DRAYNA
I couldnât look at Syn right now because I knew heâd have that smug, know-it-all, shit-eating grin on his face, and I was beyond mortified that Stryker was doing this right here, right now. I had always thought it was his family and mine pushing us together, because that was what they wanted.
I had never considered that Stryker wanted me all on his own, apart from the pressure our families put on us. Weâd been a team, a duo for so long that it never occurred to me that heâd want to get serious about us. But then again, I had done my best to avoid any kind of serious talks between us; my default mode had been to always shut him down before he could voice any kind of significant feelings.
Truth was, Iâve always loved Stryker, but I also loved the freedom afforded me before Iâm to submit to my legal obligation: forming a family. And I got that the government in place was afraid that our species would die out if we didnât do something about it. But I also blamed them for coming up with these stupid laws. Laws that deemed women as little more than breeding factories and thatâs what I objected to more than anything.
If it werenât for the Eidolon virus killing off most of the women on the planet, I was sure that women would have been able to freely meet a man, fall in love, and build on that relationship organically, with all the time in the world. Not have this farce of purported protections in place for women when all it was doing was forcing a timeline on us to start a family. Goddamned laws.
Now, Stryker was looking at me expectantly, so I belatedly grasped that the ball was now in my court. I had to say something, while trying to school my voice to disguise how nervous I was.
âStryker, this isâunexpected,â I said. That was extremely lame. The smirk on Synâs face told me he agreed. âUm, I mean, is this really the time and place to be declaring yourself like this?â
Stryker frowned. Clearly, thatâs not what he expected to hear, but he came up with something more intelligible than what I could spit out. âAnd when would that be? You either run away, have a good excuse for running off, or you shut me down before I could say anything.â
Everything he just said was entirely true. Iâd been a fucking coward, running away from him and what he represented. The way he put it made me ashamed of my cowardly actions, but he didnât know one crucial fact. Stryker was one of my weaknesses, him and that gorgeous body of his. And now both Syn and River seemed to share that honor, tooâbeing my weakness while also being one of my biggest sources for strength. But I had also wanted to live my life free of societyâs constraints, even if it was just for a little while. And all it
