CHAPTER SIXTEEN

It's a trap

BIRGITH STARED AT the Grand Master as he entered.

“You!” His face lit as he looked her over. “What are you doing here?”

Birgith stared at the door behind him, refusing to answer. Her shoulders slumped. Of course he’d recognised her. She’d known he would, but still she’d hoped otherwise.

“What did you expect to gain?” He frowned at her. “I heard you tried to sow discord in the Fox Clan Council. I had to work hard to smooth that over.”

His insincere protestations were like oil in her ear. They glided in, but left a big mess.

“Sneaking around where you’re not meant to be. That’s worrying behaviour. Who are you working with? Why are you here?”

Birgith followed the grain of the wood with her eyes, comparing each hinge to determine any weakness.

“Didn’t you claim kinship with the previous Bear Leader?” His eyes gleamed. “I’ll send a message to his widow. I’m sure she isn’t aware of your visit. And the rest of your family are likely worried about you too.”

Somehow, she didn’t trust what might happen to her after that. Thanca would not be kind to her. And without the crystal, she had no proof against her aunt. She must find it.

“Tell me why you are here? What were you looking for?” He loomed over her, staring down into her face.

Inside, she followed her brothers’ journey closer to her. All three of them were together, approaching over the mountains.

“You were interested in the dragon in the Castilion.” He stroked his chin. “Could you be in league with it? I wonder if it will come to save you?”

Birgith continued to stare at the door, refusing to display any reaction to what he said.

The Grand Master mumbled to himself, looking sideways at her. “I think your visit is an opportunity. While we wait to hear from the new Bear Clan Leader, we can test out that theory.”

Birgith frowned. Thanca had only been suggested as the Clan Leader Regent a day before, so how did he know already?

Her fantasies of shifting her hand to a claw and striking down the Grand Master made her struggle not to smile. It would be satisfying to get rid of the person who had, no doubt, been involved in the capture of her brother. But she knew that could only be a fantasy, as it wouldn’t solve, but only add to her problems. She would still be captive within the Conservatoire with too many people around for her to sneak out. For now, that remained an enjoyable dream.

With a sneer, he turned and left the storeroom. Clanks and a dragging sound meant likely they were blocking the door. There would be no escape that way.

Birgith settled to wait. A lump in her stomach formed at the possibilities his words presented. Were her brothers flying into a trap?

Only the moving patch of sunlight through the barred window gave away that time was passing. Otherwise Birgith felt frozen, trapped in a room with no way out. Her stomach gnawed at her, reminding her how long it had been since she’d eaten.
