Chapter Fourteen

ROB

Rob focused on the essence all around him. Though he was here only as a manifestation, he tried to use what he felt to reach for something more. And every time he attempted to do so, he found it more difficult than it should be. He was not connected to this essence in the way he needed to be to find the kind of power he wanted. There was energy here, which he felt vaguely, but it wasn't the kind of energy he would've detected somewhere that essence was more prominent. Every time he thought that he had an opportunity to try to detect something else, he felt Arowend beginning to swirl around him, adding a bit more of himself to the essence that Rob was drawing upon and trying to hold Rob in place.

"We have to find a way to move," Rob suggested.

"I've told you I'm unable to find anything, and it doesn't seem as if the essence is letting me move. I can travel downward, but I'm not able to follow the flow upward. I can pull essence from above, though," he went on, "but I'm not able to use it in any other way, nor am I able to draw it the way that I think it needs to be done for us to find the kind of power that exists."

Rob could feel the pulling of that essence, and as he did, he wondered if maybe there would be some way for him to draw upon something more. Even as he attempted to feel it and focused on that strange unity essence, he began to recognize that he felt something more.

At first, he wasn't sure about what he was detected, but the longer he felt the Dragon, the more he became aware that what he was detecting was another source of unity essence, something coming toward them, though it did not do so rapidly. It was slowly beginning to sweep in their direction, making Rob think he had time — but he didn't have that much time. There was a real danger here for them because he didn't know what would happen if they were to be stuck.

And unfortunately, it did seem as if they were stuck.

He tried to follow the flow of essence upward. Normally, such a thing should be easier. He could allow himself to simply follow what he detected, to let the essence guide him, but for whatever reason, there was a directionality to the essence as if he were stepping in the current of a river that kept him down, attempting to sweep toward him and hold him in place. As much as Rob wanted to try to fight through that, he didn't think he could.

"You can't do it, can you?" Arowend asked.

Rob shook his head.

"I can feel something," he started and looked up, trying to make sense of the flow of essence. He could feel it, but that was all he could do. "I can't see the essence like I once did.
