Aiden
I never would have imagined that the next morning would be worse. Everything ached from the top of my head to the tips of my toes, and just getting out of bed was a struggle. If not for the healerâs apprentice whoâd sat up all night and woken me up every few hours, assistance, I wouldnât have been able to get up. He helped me into the bathroom and hung my clothes for the day over a bar on the wall. He bent and set the shower for me, forced more of that awful tasting but wondrous medicine on me, and left for his own bed. When I shed my nightclothes, it surprised me to find not as many bruises as I thought I should have. The worst of them was on my jaw and I touched it gingerly, wondering if Iâd have to explain how I got it. Probably not, though. I didnât think Liam would look twice even if I showed up to work in a dress and heels, unless I had blond hair. I chuckled at the brat checking me out if I wore a dress and knew I couldnât let that slip out. After the shower I felt less like a punching bag and more like a person. I made my way slowly to the kitchens to pick up Liamâs breakfast. The people here would have delivered it themselves, but since our arrival, he insisted on me bringing it. Mostly to keep the kitchen staff from finding at least one woman in bed with him. Although how he thought he was being discreet with taking them to his room was beyond me. Everyone in the castle likely knew.
I waited while they set the tray up, wincing occasionally as taking a deep breath hurt. Finally, it was ready. I thanked the cook, as I did every morning, balanced the tray to open the door but one of the prep cooks opened it for me as I walked out of the kitchen. I groaned at the steps between here and Liamâs room. Couldnât he just get up and go to the dining room for breakfast today, like a normal human being? Another thing I shouldnât say. Prince Cain and the dragon, Isaiah, were smiling at each other as they walked down the hall.
âBe patient, leannán,â Isaiah told Cain, a smirk pulling at his lips.
It was in a different language, but I recognized that last word and it explained why Isaiah was so protective of the prince. At that moment, they noticed me. The princeâs eyes widened, and he looked over at Isaiah. The dragon narrowed his eyes at me and growled, low and menacing. I truly believed he would kill me in this moment. My bet was that their relationship was a secret and to keep it, Isaiah would do whatever it took. I shook my head, and would have raised my hands in surrender, but I couldnât with both of them holding the tray.
âDonât worry, your secret is safe with me.
