Back in her nest at the castle, Denoweth was resting. She opened her eyes just in time to see the lightning. Hope filled her heart for the first time in days. “She has taken flight!” Standing up, wanting to fly away, she discovered a shackle around her ankle that prevented her from going. Queen Morwyen walked out from under the shadows and glared at her captive.

“Yes, I saw the lightning, too. Your daughter has taken flight. She should be easy to find now. I will not need you any longer, my daughter and her men will find her for me.”

“But why am I a prisoner? Let me go to her!” she screeched, fighting back breathing fire as she did so. “I can get there quicker than you and your men.”

“You are not a prisoner, my pet. You are merely shackled for safekeeping. I don’t want anyone getting any bright ideas about taking you, too,” the queen lied, unconvincingly.

“You know that is impossible. I can serve only you. I beg of you, let me go to my daughter!”

The queen simply turned and walked away.

Something finally registered with Denoweth. She let out a stream of fire on the chain, but it could not be melted. The queen used her magic on it, rendering it unbreakable. She noticed the queen had seemed to age terribly in the past few days. It was more than worry over a stolen pet. Denoweth realized her daughter was special and must be the one legend spoke of. How could she have missed it? She hung her head low, feeling useless. Realizing the queen was going to kill her daughter consumed her. After fighting the shackle until she bled, Denoweth collapsed in her grief.
