Madison counted that five days had passed since her incident with the bar and her arm. And she was already starting to feel better. Determined to be mentally fit and active, she had a newfound mission and purpose. Eating again, she developed a daily routine. Which included reading, exercising, showering, and grooming herself. At the same time, she noticed that BJ had also changed, and seemingly overnight. He was gentler and more considerate. She wondered if it was because of a sense of guilt. In any event, whatever it was, she considered that things were heading in the right direction. He didn't rape her again or seem interested in sex after discovering she was pregnant. Instead, he appeared keen on developing a perverse plutonic boyfriend and girlfriend relationship. She went along with it. As she believed it to be to her advantage. And it meant that she was less likely to die. If a friendly conversation or a hand on the shoulder was all that it took, then she was up for it. It was all part of "whatever it takes," and she felt in a much stronger position for it. She believed that one day her chance at freedom would come. The more she made BJ feel at ease with her, and the more she built an empathetic emotional connection with him, then, in her view, the sooner that day would be.
BJ's new attitude and the shift in their relationship also brought changes to the bomb shelter. One weekend he started to bring down more furniture. As a result, she had a mirror, a proper bed, fresh linen, and a bedspread. She also had posters on the walls. And best of all, she had a small radio which she constantly played, even at night. Finally, there was music and other voices, real voices. The radio gave her company and connected her to the outside world. It was a delightful reprieve from the endless silence.
