Twenty

Nikki’s soft hand in mine soothes some of my worry over her seeing this part of my life. I give it a gentle squeeze and then turn back to my dad. My heart sinks at his condition. How his liver is even still functioning at this point is a goddamn miracle. He mumbles something—no doubt about my mom—and then lurches forward. I grab him around the waist and lift him, supporting him so we can shuffle out to my car.

Nikki opens the door in front of us and I give her a look I hope expresses my gratitude. As mortified as I was when I realized she followed me in here, I’m grateful for her help.

It’s the first time I’ve had someone with me when I’ve had to come get my dad, and it’s nice knowing there’s someone here for me. I’ve been taking care of my dad for so long, I have forgotten what it feels like to be taken care of. Even though she’s not really doing anything, just her presence here, and her support, makes it feel like she’s taking care of me.

I can’t help but think we’re swimming in dangerous waters right now. Our whole fuck buddies arrangement was supposed to be sex only and yet we’ve basically spent the day on an hours-long date. Now she’s seeing my dad at his worst and surprisingly hasn’t run away screaming.

Nikki is a lot stronger than I’ve given her credit for because this is definitely above and beyond the call of duty for what our arrangement is supposed to be.

But I don’t hate it.

The exact opposite in fact. I think I might like that she knows this about me.

It’s the real me. The me no one else sees.

I push my wayward thoughts aside and focus on the issue at hand—my dad.

He stumbles to the car, and I gently help him get in the back seat. I get him strapped in and then close the door, taking a deep breath of the cool air and closing my eyes. I wish I could say this is new for him, but we’ve done this so many times now, it’s almost a habit.

I turn to Nikki, who’s standing outside the passenger door, staring intently at her phone.

“I’m really sorry about this. Do we have time to drop him off before I take you back to your place? His house is just around the corner.”

“I cancelled my dinner plans.” She waves her phone at me, and I can see her text messages open.

My eyes go wide. “You did?”

She nods, looking at me intently.

“Why?” The word comes out shallower than I intended, but I don’t understand why she’d do that. I’m nothing special to her.

“I didn’t want you to feel rushed, and I don’t mind helping out.” She bites her lip nervously like she’s afraid I might push her away.

I’m speechless.

I don’t have a charming comeback, and all the walls I keep up against women are slowly crumbling in the face of her kindness and support.
