Chapter Nineteen

Carl

Anne wanted to wait, so I waited. For months. Now I’m standing near someone else.

She has long, red hair that flows over the front of her perky breasts, which are barely covered by a yellow bikini top. Her skin is fair, freckled, and flawless. When she walks her hips sway from side to side and everyone has to stop and stare, it’s so hypnotizing. She’s smart as a whip, funny, and she swims faster than all the other girls. Her name is Emma, and everyone wants to mate with her.

“Heya Carl. Your shift almost over?” she asks in her adorably raspy voice, bouncing on her toes at my side.

“You know it is, Emma. You ask every day.” I gently shove her on the shoulder in a playful way. She does ask me every day. And she asks the same follow up question too.

“Well, then, maybe would you like to go out after? With me, I mean.” She twists her hands shyly in front of her in that sweet way that drives a certain type of man mad.

Giving another look around the pool to make sure everything is alright before shooting a quick glance at Emma, I shake my head and sigh. “No, thank you. I’m busy. And here’s Josh, that’s my cue to go.”

Everyone wants to mate with her except for me, that is.

“Okay fine,” Emma pouts as Josh comes up to me and takes over.

I’ve been working as a lifeguard at this indoor pool these last few weeks, which should turn into an outdoor job once the weather warms up. It took a little bit for me to get this job, but I think it’s obviously pretty good for someone who was very recently a fish. Going through all the trouble to get set up with all the “legal” documents needed to apply was worth it.

First, Anne had to come up with fake identities for Ori and me, which is apparently not easy at this time in history when everything can be verified online. But she managed to do it with time and money and the help of this really sketchy guy. We all decided to take Anne’s last name so now we’re Carl, Ori, and Anne Athans.

Then I had to learn to read and write enough to pass the lifeguard classes and…boy, that was tough. I worked on it day and night though, and I actually took to it a lot faster than I thought I would. I think it was probably because of Ori’s force-thing-whatever but Anne likes to say it’s just because I’m smart. I’ll let her think that if it makes her like me more.

Once I could fumble through the reading and writing I took the necessary classes. I passed those with flying colors. Turns out, I’m a really good student! Maybe someday I’ll go to school for even more stuff. Ori wants to learn about politics and geography for some reason so maybe we can do that together.

Once I got through my training it wasn’t too hard to find a job.
