Chance had told him to pull around the back of the office building where the clinic was located and park next to his Tahoe. Luke understood once he arrived. Cars were still in the parking lot, belonging to Dr. Berry, Norma, and Gigi, he assumed. Luke hoped Chance was most likely not embarrassed by their burgeoning relationship but understood discretion and the desire to keep some things private, at least for now.

Luke: I’m here.

A moment later, Chance walked out from a door on the far side of the building. “Hey there,” Chance called out, and led Luke into the building and up a narrow stairwell. “I keep that door locked all the time, so no one can get into my place,” Chance said at the top of the stairs. He opened a tall door, and Luke followed him inside.

Luke’s eyes went wide when he saw Chance’s studio apartment. “This is incredible.” It wasn’t a lot of square footage, but all opened up into one extremely large studio that took up the most of the second floor of the building. A giant flat-screen television mounted on a wall in front of a comfortable-looking sofa took up one side of the room, across from a full kitchen with a dining table. Off in the furthest corner of the apartment, Luke spotted a large bed.

Chance was clearly pleased to show this off to Luke. “Remind me to take you up to the rooftop.”

“Oh, most certainly.” Luke was in awe as he walked around. Having spent nearly the last twenty-four hours in his bedroom/office, Luke felt immature compared to someone who had his life under control.

Just then, a black cat leapt down off a bookshelf onto the dining table, gazing up cautiously at Luke. “Hello there,” Luke said as he greeted Chance’s pet. He held out his hand and smiled as the cat rubbed its face against him.

Chance grinned. “This is Sheba.”

“Sheba.” Luke’s lips quirked. “That’s quite a name. Beautiful.”

“Handsome,” Chance said, and offered Luke a bottle of beer. “Sheba is a boy, so he’s handsome.”

“That means I’ll be having dinner with two handsome men tonight.” Luke watched as Sheba jumped off the table and strolled toward the sofa. He glanced back at the kitchen. “Something smells amazing.”

Chance flushed pink, those bright eyes shining. “Thank you. Everything is simmering right now.” He stepped back, walking toward another staircase. “We’ve got some time now, I guess. Let me show you upstairs.”

The rooftop patio was Chance’s pride and joy, that was obvious from his expression. He’d cleaned it up, put some wooden benches in, and some plants and small container trees. This time of night, the street below them was full of people walking to neighborhood restaurants and bars, and out in the distance, downtown Houston lit up like a jewel.

Luke took another drink from his beer bottle and glanced around. “This is incredible,” he said, his voice low. “I would have never guessed all this was up here.” Glancing over the edge, he turned back to Chance.
