CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Night had fallen when they reached the old bunker. Anya looked at Tyler, wondering if he would say anything about where she had taken them. This wasn’t their first time here. Ten months ago, they had chased Elizabeth Hart into this very bunker, and Anya had fought her nearly to the death to keep her from delivering American nuclear plans to the Soviet Government.

She thought she had succeeded. She thought that she and Tyler had stolen the plans before they could be delivered to the Soviets. She thought…

Well, it didn’t matter what she thought. She had failed. The Soviets—or at least Ivan—had the plans, and if he had them, then others did too. Sooner or later, Stalin’s government would be included among those others, and the advantage the Americans had over the Russians would be eliminated. Then the world would spend who knows how long on the brink of a war that would be very much the opposite of cold. Or perhaps one of the powers would develop a superweapon even worse than the atom bomb.

Her new mission then, would be to prevent that war, to maintain the uneasy truce between powers at all costs. How to do that, she wasn’t sure, but that was a question for another time. Most immediately, they needed to stop Ivan from orchestrating these attacks and possibly precipitating a nuclear war.

To do that, she needed Tyler. He needed to trust her, at least enough to work with her. She hoped he could trust her enough to believe that she hadn’t betrayed and used him, but if he still didn’t believe that after all of this time, then she wasn’t sure what else she could do.

He gave no sign of suspicion at their choice of hideout. Even when he asked, “Is this Hart’s old bunker?” and she confirmed it, he only nodded and asked, “You’re sure the MGB won’t follow us here?”

She sighed. “I’m not sure of anything, Tyler. Ivan has proven himself the genius he always was. I hope this place will be safe. That’s the best I can do right now.”

He nodded again and didn’t reply.

Anya checked the generator. It took several tries, and she had to siphon a little of the fuel out of the tank and prime the cylinders, but finally, she was able to get the generator to power on. They would have light, at least.

Food was another issue. They could hunt, she supposed, but that was probably not a good use of their time. Oh well. They had gone nights without eating before. Another wouldn’t hurt them.

They found cots in one of the rooms. Most of them were mildewed, almost rotten, but one was still usable. Tyler handed it to her. "You can use it. I'll sleep on the ground."

“I don’t mind sleeping on the ground. You use it.”

“It’s fine,” he insisted. “I used to sleep on the ground all the time when I was little.”

“So did I.”

“Just…” he sighed. “Just take the damned cot, Anya.”

Anya pursed her lips and looked away.
