The police let them both off with a warning. They both walk out of the station, bloody and bruised, permanent scowls on their faces. I don’t bother following after them. I can’t even look at Roman in the eye.

Unsurprisingly, he’s outside the station, waiting for me. I walk straight past him.

He leans to touch my arm. “Hey, where you are -“

“Do not touch me,” I put my hand up. My blood boils.

He softens, remorse washing over his features. “I didn’t mean to lose control like that.”

“Yes, you did.”

He frowns. “No, I didn’t. I…I lost control back there, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Ken. Please, just come back with me -“

“We were just talking, Roman,” I breathe. “He crossed the line but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle. You can trust me, you know? You didn’t have to do that.”

“What else was I supposed to? I see the two of you talking, looking like the best of friends, his hand over yours and him saying that he’d wish you’d choose him? How the fuck was going to cope with that?”

“By trusting me!” I exclaim. I press my hands to my chest. “Trusting me, Roman. Did you think I would cheat on you?”

He doesn’t say a word. But the look in his eyes wavers. A flash of uncertainty.

“You thought I would,” I murmur. “Didn’t you?”

“I didn’t say that,” he sighs.

I shake my head, walking away. “You didn’t have to.”
