MINK’S ON THE LOOSE

“Oh no!” she said, straining to make out the print.

Animal rights released eight minks from a fur farm last night. Their whereabouts are unknown, the owners have given a warning not to approach them as they can be dangerous.

Evie could not read any more as the paper was torn and soggy, she searched for more clues finding the date it, was last Thursday, the day Evie had seen the creature that she now was a mink stalking the pups. Now really worried, she started to panic, what if they had all ganged together and killed Dogfin Missy and the pups.

“Got to get a move on!” she said, quickly putting her water bottle away, she started to climb, fear driving her on, she pushed her body to its limit. Finally reaching her destination, she couldn’t see them in the river. Running to her tent and checking inside, everything was as she had left it. Walking down to the river, she scanned the area looking for any clues, reaching the riverbank she could see the mud was all churned up, footprints were everywhere crouching down Evie took a closer look.

Dogfins’ footprints were there but with other ones; she could see claw marks deep in the ground. Evie stood up with a gasp of horror, she held her hand over her mouth, knowing he was weak from his injury, had the minks come to finish him and his family off. She started to call, “Dogfin! Missy!” over and over again while running back and too. At the hollow tree, she fell to her knees calling their names, only the echo of her voice came back.

“Where on earth could they be?” she questioned herself. Getting to her feet, she notices strands of fur at the entrance, dark brown fur picking it up she examined it closely.

“Oh no, it’s the same fur that I found yesterday, it must have crossed the river. Please don’t let it have gone in the cave.” She ran as quickly as she could to the back entrance and lowered herself down.

“Dogfin! Missy!” she whispered, her voice was trembling with fear. The light that came down the hollow of the tree was weak, flicking open her phone she held it high. The nest was empty, she could see the rock where she’d sat, and played with the pups, and what looked like a pile of rags was near the opening of the hollow tree. Slowly, she went on towards it; a nasty rotting smell hit her nostrils making her wrench, covering her nose and mouth with her hand, tears started to spill down her cheeks, knowing it was something dead. She was trying to regain her composure, breathing deeply before carrying on and slowly walking over the light now shone directly on it. “Thank god,” she said, it wasn’t Dogfin or any of his family, it was the creature she had seen on the other side of the river, one of the minks’ that had been set free.

Relief flooded over her, cold and shaking, tears rolled down her cheeks.
