I’d walked four blocks down from the bloodbath I’d left behind less than an hour ago. One of the advantages car thieves had in the wintertime was the visible exhaust idling cars gave off. All it took for a thief was a quick look in the window. If no one was behind the wheel, the car was as good as stolen. Such was my luck as I’d approached a nearby grocery store. This part of town was littered with graffiti, and all the store windows were protected by bars and steel gates. I’d walked by a busy corner liquor store, and there was a new Honda Accord sitting outside. I checked to make sure no one was watching and drove off.

Before going to the airport, I made a quick stop at the local Walmart and grabbed a few items that would help me to disguise myself enough to get into the airport without being recognized. The costume wasn’t the only challenge ahead. I had to figure out a way to get my weapons and an ID past the security checkpoint.

After my Walmart trip, I got back in the car and slipped on a blond, wavy toupee. I bought a pair of nerdy reading glasses, a pair of slacks, and a button-down shirt. They were all muted colors so as to not draw attention to myself. Walmart wasn’t in the business of selling fake IDs, so I had to figure something else out on that front, but for now I was good to go and headed toward the airport.

The drive through the midafternoon Chicago traffic was less hectic than usual. When I pulled off the exit for Midway Airport, there were four cop cars lined up along the initial departure section. I had already committed to driving down that narrow strip, so I obeyed the local speed limit and tried not to look suspicious. I pushed the nagging thought of being a wanted criminal and driving a stolen car far from my mind. As I passed the cop cars, I carefully checked my rearview mirror and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw I was in the clear.

I wouldn’t get very far without a plane ticket. It didn’t matter where the destination was; I was purchasing it just to get to the gated area, and then whichever gate had the flight to Baku would be my only goal. It only took a few minutes to buy a ticket online, and then I ran into the airport, keeping my head down while walking around.

The disguise was more believable than I thought I’d be able to pull off. I still didn’t have an ID, but that was about to change. I went into the first restroom I could find and acted like I was washing my hands. In reality, I stared into the mirror, looking for anyone even slightly resembling me. It took longer than I’d hoped, but eventually I found a man who was maybe five years older and a little heavier than me.
