Surname studies backed by documented family trees

The gold standard among Y-chromosome studies is the marriage of a long-term worldwide documentary project with a new Y-chromosome test component. This kind of surname DNA study can be extremely powerful in its reach both to confirm long-accepted family trees and to knock holes in them.

The Pennington Family History Association has data on more than 16,500 Pennington and variant surname households worldwide. The 56 Y-chromosome results they have collected to date reveal firstly that several distinct families have adopted the surname Pennington over the years – i.e. it is a multi-ancestor surname – and secondly that all of the currently documented families that have held the surname for many centuries probably link back to just one or two villages in Lancashire in north-east England.

There are many examples of this kind of DNA/documentary combined study, including the Rice study, led by the Edmund Rice (1638) Association, and the Payne study, which discovered that well-documented English Payne families from Suffolk, Huntingdonshire and Jersey in the Channel Islands are members of a single family, not unrelated families as was previously thought.
