Delâs face was sullen and very annoyed when he told her. âReally? Again? I wonât hire you back next time.â
âI figured.â What would Phex do then? No cafe to catch him. And there went his stomach again. Phex had been throwing up a lot lately.
She snorted. âWhat a bother. Ah, well, I always thought you had a nice voice.â
Phex stared at his boss. Well, former boss.
She frowned fiercely. âIâm not an idiot, you know? Donât worry. I wonât tell anyone. They wouldnât believe me even if I did.â She snorted. âBlue-haired refugee from Attaconâs saddest little moon becoming a god? Donât make me laugh. Itâll be fun, though, to see you on my cupola someday. I will be able to say, I knew him when.â
Phex wondered who sheâd say that to. âThey booted me once already.â
âSo, donât let it happen as second time. Youâre tougher than that. Tougher than they are.â
Phex didnât think it was a matter of toughness, but it was oddly reassuring to know that one person from his past thought he could actually succeed.
Still, Phex checked his accounts. The divinity had paid him for his time as a potential. The cafe had paid him for his work. He wasnât rich, but he had more money than heâd ever had before. Maybe enough to start a new life somewhere? What kind of life could he have, if he couldnât come back to this cafe? Was it enough to open his own cafe? As a refugee, he doubted it. But it should have been enough to quiet his unruly stomach. It wasnât.
Then, in no time at all, blessed by a fast spaceship and divine mandate, Phex was back on Divinity 36.
A disinterested acolyte ushered him off the transport, escorted him to the cantor dorm to dump his bag (someone else was in his niche â very annoying), and then led him directly to a practice dome. For some reason, everyone was there, in the same dome. Well, all the potentials who were now left on Divinity 36.
Berrilâs face was a picture. Phex thought heâd always remember the way she looked in that moment. As much as heâd missed her, sheâd missed him more â or was better at showing it. She, who liked everyone and whom everyone liked, thought he was special.
The moment he greeted the space, Berril flew at him, literally. Just unfurled her wings and dove off the dais.
He caught her easily. âHi, birdie.â
âYou! You you you!â She buried her head in his neck and hugged him as tight as she could with arms and wings. âPhex, my Phex.â
She pushed back a bit, so he set her down on her feet. She cupped the side of his face. âYou lost weight.â
âItâs muscle. I havenât been gracing enough.â
âWell, that will change soon.â She threw her arms around him again, shrouding him in unfurled wings. Bumped her forehead against this chest.
Many of the sifters and all of the graces followed Berril, though at a much more sedate pace.
âYouâre back, then.
