Report on Toronto: The Encampment Support Network
Words by Simone E. Schmidt, photos by Jeff Bierk
As I write this in early November 2021, Toronto is still reeling from the militarized encampment evictions at Trinity Bellwoods, Alexandra Park, and Lamport Stadium. Media has focused on police violence at the evictions rather than the ongoing housing crisis or daily police violence towards unhoused people living in encampments. This chapter will focus on the Cityâs other strategies to evict encampments from May 2020 to May 2021, and the way in which the Encampment Support Network (ESN), a volunteer group of over 180 people, pushed back through a combination of mutual aid, public education, art, and direct action. This account is necessarily partial given the wide range of perspectives held by a group so big and the limitation on the word count. I have also underemphasized information that is inextricably linked to encampments but will be covered in other chapters of this book, namely the overdose crisis and the shelter-hotels. Thank you to AK, Amie Tsang, Andrew X, Anthony Brown, Derrick Black, Domenico Saxida, Ginger Dean, Les Harper, Zoë Dodd, Nichole Leveck, Jeff Bierk, Marcel North Gallant, Jesse Crowe, Nathan Doucet, and Lil Man, all who contributed to this chapter in the form of interviews or notes.
