Ranchline All Natural Lamb

I met lamb grower Todd Taylor at the Albuquerque Downtown Growers’ Market in Robinson Park. He had driven all the way from Roswell that morning to promote and sell his lamb cuts, and I bought a small boneless leg to roast or smoke. We struck up a conversation and I was cheered by what he had to say, hopeful that more meat producers would follow Taylor’s lead in raising livestock naturally.

Ranchline’s lamb products are 100 percent natural, meaning the animals aren’t exposed to growth hormones or stimulants. Plus, they are all grass fed. As a result, Taylor told me, his lamb meat has great flavor and is one of the most tender meats available in New Mexico. Of course, that was a sales pitch I would have to test out with the leg of lamb I had just put in my sack. As it turned out, the lamb, which I smoked, was terrific.

As Taylor claims on his website, “Just living in the western part of the United States generates a value system like no other place around the world. Ranchline All Natural is a local, New Mexico company and our lambs are raised north of Roswell, New Mexico, at Felix River Ranch in a natural environment that consists of open ranges with natural grasses and humane husbandry practices. We are simple people with a simple goal of providing each customer a product that was raised with love and care from the very beginning to the time it arrives on your dinner table.”

I asked Taylor what he says to people who say they don’t like lamb. “I tell them they probably had lamb that had aged on the hoof, and that was called mutton. Our lamb is young and is not gamy, and it can be used in almost any recipe that calls for beef. So I advise them to find their favorite beef recipe and substitute lamb for a change.”

Since your neighborhood supermarket probably has a very limited supply of the different cuts of lamb, Ranchline All Natural has convenient online ordering and a wide selection of cuts from shanks to chops to roasts. They even sell lamb jerky. The frozen cuts are shipped to customers all over the United States.
