The man takes a leisurely puff on his pipe and Xyla hiccups again. He glances disdainfully at my diamonds and fake fur cape and bare chest. He isn’t scared of me. I wouldn’t be scared of me either. Nobody’s scaring anybody in this scene.

“That’s a bit scary,” Xyla says slowly. She looks at me and then back at the man. “Are you joking or is the clip-on lawyer really an assassin?”

I scratch an itch above my eye. My head hurts. I could use some coffee. Or more wine.

“We’re all assassins in this business,” the man says drolly. He looks at his pipe, frowns, and then empties the bowl into the blackstone sink. He blows out the ashes and taps it clean and slides it into his waistcoat pocket. Then he sighs and holds his hand out for me to shake. I do it without breaking eye contact. Silliness aside, this man is for real. I remember meeting him all those years ago, but I don’t remember him saying a damned thing. I always figured he was Uncle Ed’s lover, but looking back to that one meeting, he acted as much bodyguard as boyfriend.
