CHAPTER 18

“And then what?” Willow asked.

Clarissa’s two roommates were hanging on every word of her tale of woe, armed with three mugs of hot chocolate the next night when the three of them were home together.

“It was the worst. The mom told me I killed her baby and that I was worthless. Right before she started screaming. The Dad started crying and told me to leave.”

Willow patted her arm. “I’m so sorry. You did everything you were supposed to do.”

“More than you were supposed to. You said they made an exception because they usually don’t do the hypothermia protocol under 36-weeks,” Simone sympathized, internal medicine having a much higher mortality rate in the elderly range of humanity than they did in peds. “Besides, you said the hypothermia might save the baby’s brain.”

Clarissa stared at the framed picture of the three of them on the wall of the dining room. It was the picture she’d taken before they’d headed to the resident and fellow mixer. They were smiling with the absurd idea their only care in the world was how cool and awesome they looked.

Willow and Simone had gotten selected to be the face of their programs, and Peds picked yet another one of their rare dudes. At the time, Clarissa had considered her night a success after her totally crazy fun sex, the cherry on the top of her wild night (minus narrowly avoiding a threesome with her brother).

Partying was a win. Drinking was a win.

This hot chocolate was definitely not a booze-soaked win. She should invest in more alcohol for days like these.

It probably wouldn’t improve her skills photo-wise, but who cared? Nobody cared about trivial things like that. Photos weren’t important. The dominant element was darkness, not light. Not a color but the lack of color. Black absorbed all things where white was composed of the entire spectrum of visible light.

“Clarissa?” Simone asked, sounding genuinely worried.

“It might. Or might not. The world is a terrible, horrible place. Everything is bad. Darkness. Awful,” Clarissa answered truthfully.

The dining room was quiet while they drank their respective hot chocolates, and Clarissa kept looking at their picture.

What was she becoming?

Now Simone looked upset, and that meant something. It took a huge amount of sad to unsettle Internal Med.

Good job, Clarissa, Debbie Downer.

Shut it down. Be the happy. Be the sunshine.

“Forget it. I’ve declared this a no-sad zone. We need a night of fun. Which means the Halloween party at Throckies,” Clarissa announced for the group.

Simone questioned her abrupt shift, “Fifteen seconds ago, the world was a dark and horrible place.”

“Yes, it was ten seconds ago. Now we’re focusing on slutty Halloween costumes because Halloween is less than a week away,” Clarissa decided. “Right, Willow?”

“Sure. If this is your coping mechanism,” the psychiatrist hedged.

“Run with it. Should I descend into a dark spiral of drinking, drugs, and anonymous, dirty one-night stands?”

Simone rolled her eyes, recovered, as Clarissa had gone back into ‘normal’ mode. “Lissa, I doubt you’d ever descend into dirty one-night stand territory.
