CHAPTER NINE

TRISHA SWIPED A NASTY LITTLE bloodsucker from its lunch on her bare leg and looked at Michaela. She wasn’t sure that Michaela had the right idea about sticking together, but the small voice in her head piped up and reminded her that Michaela was the bright one, the one who always came up with the best plans.

She nodded her head, but the doubts remained. Michaela was paler that she’d ever seen her before, and a slick sheen of sweat coated her face. Considering that they hadn’t had anything to drink since yesterday afternoon, the fact that Michaela was sweating at all said a lot about the pain she was in.

They needed water. Trisha could feel the strength leaching from her own legs. Her muscles trembled and she was feeling decidedly shaky. People were not designed to go without water. She knew that, hell everyone knew that. She took her eyes off Michaela and looked around instead. Trees. Scrubby undergrowth and more trees. Worse, the sun was beating hotter and hotter against the canopy and underneath it, Trisha could feel the air warming up. It was going to be a scorcher of a day.

Just what they didn’t need.

Michaela had lain back down flat on her back and closed her eyes. Gathering her strength for the trek ahead, Trisha guessed. She reached out a hand and touched her girlfriend on the cheek, trying not to get to feeling like this was all her fault again, but failing miserably. If she’d had her shit together in the first place, they would have arrived earlier at the cabin, had their wits about them and not be out here in the forest drying out like pieces of beef jerky.

Huffing out a breath, Trisha struggled to get herself under control. She wasn’t going to achieve anything if she just sat there feeling sorry for herself. Even if it was justified. She could feel bad later, when they were home, but right now, she was the able-bodied one and it might just be up to her to get them out of this god-awful mess.

Sure, they weren’t far from the coast. Sure, they were heading more or less right for the bay where there cabin was. Those guys probably had jumped in their fancy sports fishing boat and left—and yeah, Michaela was right about one thing, they probably had taken their kayak with them—but Trisha squatted there above the leaf litter and looked at Michaela. She’d be better off if Trisha went ahead.

She’d be at the beach in half an hour. About that. Most likely.

She’d be free to scout ahead, make sure those rat bastards had gone. Then she’d grab some water, go back for Michaela, get her out, worry about getting them back to civilization.

Michaela opened her eyes and tried out a smile on Trisha. It didn’t work. Pain had wormed its way into the flesh around Michaela’s eyes, and all her face showed was a deep-seated strain. She was kidding herself if she thought she was up to a hike through the forest.
