Chapter 14

Axel

“Let’s get this the fuck over with. The last time I sat at this table I ended up the unwilling attendant of Pissant’s wedding.”

I plop down into a chair at the poker table already occupied by all three of my brothers. Per usual, Zander sits to my right, Everett to my left, and Dean right in front of me. They all share a look, and I groan.

“From what we hear, you’re already dressing like a couple.” Dean snorts.

Zander chuckles.

But—to my surprise—Everett remains quiet, his gaze trained on me. “You good?”

“No, I’m not fucking good. It’s been a long damn day. I had to deal with said pissant yesterday when he came at me in my shop—”

“He came at you?” Zander demands.

“Not physically, though I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d whipped out his fucking dick and tried to compare it to mine.”

“Gross. Over his sister?”

“Not in that way,” I tell Dean. “He accused her of sleeping around. Said that if our relationship wasn’t really as serious as we claimed it was, then I needed to not show up at his wedding.”

“Every fucking picture, bro—you get in every fucking picture,” Dean says.

I laugh. “Which is what Kennedy said.” Just saying her name out loud darkens my mood. I’d put myself out there, trying to be a combination of what I want and what she needs, and she shot me down—hard.

“How did she take the rest of what he said?” Everett asks.

“Like a damned champ,” I reply. “Said she’s so used to him talking to her in that way that it’s just easier to let it roll off her shoulders.”

“Do we know where this asshole lives?” Zander questions. “Because we can load up and handle this shit right now.”

“No,” I reply even as I’ve considered doing just that. “Kennedy wants casual, and casual doesn’t kick her brother’s teeth in, no matter how fucking badly he deserves it.”

“Kennedy wants casual?” Everett questions. “Not too long ago, you both did.”

“Yeah, well.” I could lie. Could keep my pride and not tell them just why I’m so pissed. But my brothers and I aren’t like that. There are no lies between us. No mistruths. So, I take a deep breath and run a hand through my hair. “I made a move on her last night. Tried to tell her I wanted to take care of her—even if it was while we kept things casual—and she shut me down.”

“Fuck, dude,” Zander hisses.

“Damn, Axel. That’s—well—I can see how rough it is.” Dean shakes his head.

Meanwhile, once again, Everett stays quiet.

“It is what it is.”

“You still going to the wedding?” Everett asks.

“Yeah. I gave her my word. Though, she left without saying a fucking thing to me last night, so it’s possible she doesn’t even want me there.”

“You really sure about that?” Dean questions. “Seems to me like she’s running scared. Just like you are.”

“Don’t act like you’re Mr. Ready To Fucking Settle Down,” I snap. “We all saw what losing dad did to mom. And every single one of us struggles with the idea of giving anyone that kind of power.
