Chapter 14

Carter smirked at me. He leaned back in his chair, looking like a king holding court. Even though he was wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, he still looked immaculate. It was obvious just how much power and influence he had to look so at ease from jail. "You've got some balls; you know that? Not many people would make demands of me."

I met his gaze, refusing to look away. He wasn't wrong. Here he was, one of the most powerful cartel bosses in the world, and I had basically told him it was my way or the highway. It was risky since I knew it could very well piss him off, but if it did, then I didn't want to know him. He was my father, not my slave master. He had to be able to respect my boundaries and wishes if we were going to make this work.

"You're definitely my daughter," he said with a shake of his head, still smirking. "Lucas told me about your demands, and I accept. So, ask away. Just don't get pissed when I tell you I can't answer something."

I told him what I had read online about the Diaz Cartel. He barely even blinked when I recounted some of the more horrific acts they'd been accused of. Wes held my hand the entire time, but his grip tightened when I recalled the various stories I'd read about them.

"How much of it's true?" I asked, hoping at least some of it was exaggerated. Or they were being blamed for the work of others and had just capitalized on the media attention to instill fear in their rivals.

But Carter just nodded, his face neutral. "As far as I know, all of it. However, most of that is old news, from back when Juan Diaz ran the show. He was more than a bit unhinged and was known to fly off the rails at the slightest provocation. Now that Maria is running the show, they're still brutal but a bit more controlled."

I nodded—that made sense. You could only get away with murdering entire groups of people for so long before you become too big of a liability. Even a corrupt government wouldn't be able to turn a blind eye to that kind of atrocity for too long, and the Mexican government was supposed to be cracking down on organized crime.

And the more attention you bring to yourself, the bigger target you become.

"So, why do they hate you so much?" I asked next. "Lucas told me you'd tried to negotiate with them a few times, but they've always turned you down."

Carter took a deep breath and held it before letting it out slowly. He was still keeping his emotions masked, but I could see a bit starting to seep through the cracks. He was good, but he wasn't perfect. "When Juan was in control, it was just sheer cockiness on his part. He refused to accept I was a better leader and strategist than him. He thought everything could be solved by a show of force and violence.
