Chapter Nine

The weekend raced by for Brooklyn. It took both Saturday and Sunday to go over all the material the old biddies had provided her. They had this case down to the smallest details. Along with Audrey’s videos, the old biddies had given Brooklyn a large notebook filled with everything they’d found on the trucking company, plus all of Ida’s reports. It took hours to review it. She had also received a text from the undercover agent assisting her, informing her that he had arrived and was in the hotel. She would have to make time to fill him in on what was happening.

Sadie and Ginny practiced walking with Maggie, Oscar, and Nigel. Sadie needed to master how to walk Nigel now that her eyesight had diminished, so she walked at a pace Nigel was comfortable with. Before her surgery, Sadie could always see where they were going, only pretending to be blind. Now everything was foggy, and she was especially sensitive to light. For Nigel, this was nothing new. He had trained as a seeing-eye dog…and to protect Sadie.

I also know that Jeff doesn’t care for her. So I think we need to take it slow with her. Okay?”

“Sure,” said Ginny.

Sadie and Ginny made their way back to the house and settled the dogs under the blue-striped sunshade. The sun streamed through the leafy trees in Ginny’s yard and reflected different shades of blue off the water. Ginny went inside and made raspberry ice tea. As they were each enjoying a tall glass of it, Sadie’s phone buzzed.

“How’s my blind partner doing?” Isabella asked.

“Fantastic,” said Sadie as she put the phone on speaker so Ginny could hear. “I have an appointment on Monday with the specialist. Then I’ll learn for sure if my eyes are healing. I can see a lot better, but the light still bothers me. My eyesight is becoming stronger every day.”

“That’s wonderful. I’m planning to come down with our case report on Thursday evening. Is there space for me to stay at your house, or do I need a hotel?”

Ginny was about to speak, when a shriek shattered their conversation. Cop cars with
