Encrypted Hard Drive

Sometimes, we may face a situation when we need to acquire a hard drive while it is protected with encryption (FDE). As we have already mentioned in the “Acquiring Volatile Memory (Live Acquisition)” section, if the computer is still running upon your arrival at the crime scene, you should try your best to acquire its volatile memory, because there is a high probability that you can recover encryption keys from it. However, if performing live acquisition is not possible, then your only option is to acquire the encrypted hard drive and after that try to decrypt it using the appropriate tools (you cannot guarantee successful password using such tools) or simply ask for the password from the hard drive owner if possible.
