FORTY-THREE

The house falls into quietness.

Ted is staying the night. He joined Christina for a glass of gin that turned into three – or was it four? – as they flopped on the sofa in the snug with Abi and Ben watching a Christmas film. A rare evening with her kids, Christina should’ve been content. But Ted had to keep nudging her to laugh at the funny bits knowing she wasn’t concentrating. How could she?

‘You don’t need to sleep in here any more,’ Michael says when she joins him in the lounge in her pyjamas. He is already in his bed. ‘It can’t be comfortable. I’ll be fine. Get yourself a proper night’s sleep.’

Christina stands at the end of the sofa, fiddling with the tassels of his navy blanket thrown over the edge. The thought of going back to their bed is inviting. ‘What if you need me?’

‘I can always call you. Keep your phone on.’

‘I’m not sure it’s a good idea,’ she says, concerned.

‘If you could get me some more painkillers before you go up that’s all I should need. In case I get another one of these damn headaches.’

She leaves him to fetch some more tablets from the kitchen, hurt that he appears not to need her as much any more. She should look on the positive side. It’s a step in the right direction that he doesn’t want her to stay with him all night. ‘Here you go,’ she says, helping him to sit up.

‘You need to stop fussing over me.’

She hands him the tablets with a glass of water and perches on the edge of the bed beside him. ‘Michael, can I ask you something?’

‘If it’s quick. I’m tired.’

She pauses, overcome with awkwardness. Why is she having these feelings about her husband of six years? Is this a time to be probing him for answers? She can’t stop herself. ‘Something has been bothering me.’

His raises his eyebrows, silently waiting for her to continue.

‘One day, when you were in the ICU, my car wouldn’t start, so I took yours. I was looking for some change in the glove compartment to give to the tea lady collecting for the children’s ward when I found a black pair of women’s gloves.’

He looks at her intently, his eyes blinking rapidly.

There’s silence. Why won’t he answer her?

He laughs.

‘What’s so funny?’ she asks cautiously.

‘I guess you’re wondering whose they are?’

She nods, his laughter making her feel silly and small.

‘I found them.’

‘Where?’

‘At school one day, as I was walking to the car. I meant to hand them in and forgot. We should’ve given them to Anne-Marie today.’

She eyes him warily. It’s a perfectly plausible excuse. But…

‘You do believe me, don’t you?’

‘Of course I do.’ She fakes a laugh. ‘Why wouldn’t I?’

‘Good. What’s up with you? You’re jittery.’

That’s exactly what Ben said. It’s as if they’ve been discussing her.

‘Nothing. Just the stress of everything.’

‘Go and get a good night’s sleep.’ He lies down and turns his back to her.

When are things going to improve between them?

Christina checks on the kids before retiring.
