After a few hours have passed and he hasn’t sought me out, I prepare Domenica his favorite drink. I feel like a lamb to the slaughter as I rush to get everything together.

All my things are gathered in boxes. I’m hoping so badly that he’ll let me sleep in the guest bedroom. It’s beautiful, but I don’t want to think about it too much. I’m scared my hopes will be dashed.

He wouldn’t fire me right before Christmas, right?

I’ll try to cheer him up.

I choose a glass he and his wife got as a wedding present, thinking it will be a nice reminder of the love they shared for one another, regardless of how things ended up, I suppose.

I carefully prepare the Old Fashioned, peeling an orange, zesting it, preparing the sugar cube and lighting it once I put the liquor inside the glass.

Pleased with my result, I place the pretty glass on a gold platter and carry it upstairs while still wearing the uniform Domenico picked for me.

I want him to be proud of me; look at me and realize I'm wearing the outfit he chose.

I wonder if he picked out this particular size just so he could watch me squirm. It's just a little too small for it to be an accident. After all, he had me measured for it.

I think I've caught him catching a glance a few times. But he just turned me down. I’m starting to second-guess myself.

There’s no way he wants me.

I make my way to Domenico's office, platter shaky in my hands. I knock on the door and he calls for me to come in.

I'm not sure whether he's aware that we're finally the only two people left in the house now, but he doesn't say a word as I walk into the office and deposit the golden tray in front of him.

“My favorite drink, ragazza?” he asks, raising an eyebrow as if asking me a different kind of question altogether.

My body ignites at the forbidden fantasy.

“You thought you could drown my sorrows?” he answers for me. “That’s a good idea. Thank you for taking care of me.”

“Why did you send everyone away, Sir?” I ask shyly, and he looks away, his gaze troubled.

“I don't need people watching every step I take, judging me for how I grieve or don't grieve Arianna,” he replies firmly. “The important thing is, she's gone. She won't be bossing anybody around anymore. Especially not you.”

“Me?” My voice comes out squeaky.

“Yes,” he says, taking a drink. “I’d rather get shot again than see her mistreat you, ragazza.”
