Chapter 19

Emmy

The next morning, we woke up and checked for Luka again really, really early. Neil gave up and went to find something to do after about twenty minutes while I stood there and tried not to cry at the sight of nothing but open ocean for miles. Our phones had died during the night of the storm, our flashlight would die out soon as well. In fact, everything would run out eventually and we’ll be left with nothing. The only option would be to rely solely on Mother Nature.

The ‘HELP’ sign was still there, useless but necessary at the same time. When I got tired of looking at it, I retreated into the bushes as well. Neil had some coconuts ready for breakfast. It did the trick for a while, but we needed proper food to function. Fishing. We needed to learn fishing. My brother spent the entire day fashioning a spear out of the paring knife we had, using a long wooden stick and vines to bind it together. And then he went out there around late afternoon, standing in waist-deep water trying to get us something to eat.

He came back empty-handed though and sat on the beach looking so dejected that I had to go and put my arms around him, resting my chin on his head.

“Fuck, Emmy. I’m so sorry,” he said. “I’m going to get us out of here. I will. I just need to make sure we have enough food every day to keep up our energy.”

“We’ll have some more coconuts, it’s fine,” I told him, trying to placate him. “You’re tired. We’ll try again tomorrow.”

It sucked. The whole evening just fucking sucked all around. We went back to the cave at night, depressed and just giving in to sleep because there wasn’t much else to do.
