CHAPTER 10
September
Mimi
IT WAS A MONTH later, and I was still thinking âbout what happened the Friday night after I received my ninety-day chip earlier in the day. After coming inside of my place with groceries, I put them down on the floor to dig my chip out of my wallet. I held the chip, which looked like a plain white gambling chip, in my hands. I hadnât expected it to mean so much, but it represented that I took a gamble that cutting off all contact with Jovan and focusing on myself would make me feel better. And I did. And I was starting to feel that even if for some crazy-ass reason we never got back together, I would be alright.
Thatâs why my heart felt like it fell out of my chest when I saw Jovanâs text: âAre u at home? Can I come over? I got something 2 tell u.â I stopped putting away the groceries and just stood in my kitchen. Was this my Higher Powerâs way of saying I was ready for him, and he was finally ready for me? Victor would probably disagree, but he wasnât my Higher Power. I hadnât heard from Jovan in a month. I read his text two more times, trying to decide what I should text back. I finally decided it was time we made up. All these months without me had finally taught him a lesson.
âIâm at home. Yeah, u can. When u coming over?â I texted.
âI can be there in 30 mins,â he texted back.
In that time, I put up the rest of the groceries, washed my face, put on eyeliner and mascara, ran my fingers through my locs, smoothed on shea butter, and slipped on a pair of dark blue stretch jeans and a half sweater that showed my stomach. When the security desk told me that Jovan was downstairs, Victorâs face flashed in my head, but I decided to let Jovan in anyway. I felt my heart pumping again.
âHey,â I breathed out as I cracked open the door and leaned on the doorframe.
âHey,â he said, standing still like he was afraid of me. I wanted to touch his smooth curly hair under his baseball cap.
âI guess I should invite you in,â I said, without moving. âAre you gonna have me arrested if I do?â
âYou know I wouldnât,â he said as he got closer to me without coming inside. âChula convinced me to do that, but I knew you wouldnât hurt me.â
âYou need to tell dat heffa that,â I responded. But I would hurt her, I said to myself as I fully opened my door, walked back in my home and plopped down on my couch. Jovan followed me in and sat down across from me.
âSo what do you wanna tell me?â I arched my back so he could see my sexy flat stomach. He had to miss my body as much as I missed his.
âI wanted you to know something before you find out on some blog or from somebody else.
