Eventually, it was Vito who accomplished what Damiano couldn’t. He was resentful that Damiano had married her.

“I still don’t understand why you had to marry the bitch. It’s going to cause further tumult in the ranks,” he snapped sullenly.

“I’m aware that you’re upset but let me warn you right here. She’s my wife and no one calls her bitch.”

Vito’s only response was an infuriating glare.

Damiano made a sweeping gesture in her direction. “She needed protection; you saw—”

“Then get her a goddamned bodyguard. Jesus! Marriage? Are you crazy, Damiano?”

“Stai zito! I don’t need your permission to make decisions about my private life. You saw what they did to that ...”

Damiano swallowed his words. He didn’t want to mention the man that they had saved in Ellensburg. Not until he knew that he was going to pull through. It had been six days and he was still in critical condition. His doctors in L.A were not very positive about his chances of survival.

A disinterested expression met Vito’s withering look.

“This is gonna come back and bite you in the ass. No, it’s gonna fucking slice a whole piece of flesh out. Segna le mie parole. You can be sure Pops is not gonna be happy about this.”

“Your Pops doesn’t have any say over my life or what I decide to do with it, or how I run the family. If you have a problem with it ... I can assure you it won’t be difficult to find a replacement for the northeast region.”

It was an unvarnished threat. Damiano meant every word. Vito seethed as he stomped out. “Mark my words, Damiano. You’ve just given your enemies the keys to the armory.”

Ceejay watched him leave. Her gaze remained fixated on the now empty space. Her bottom lip caught between her bite. The revelation cleaved the tenuous hold she had over her emotions. She stole a quick glance at Damiano.

He saw the change in her but remained impassive. Acceptance was written all over her face.

“So, who am I? Mrs. Fargo or Vitale?” She cringed at the sound of both surnames.

Her mind was awash with unanswered questions. She was reluctant to contemplate the reasons why he had married her. He was omnipotent. Matrimony should never have been an option to save her. It didn’t make sense. It wouldn’t keep her from being questioned by the local law enforcement. How was she going to explain being shot? Why was she being pursued? What was she doing in a strange city? And more importantly, what was the real motivation behind the surreptitious marriage of which she had absolutely no memory?

Damiano watched as a heavy glaze of ambiguity and doubt spread across Ceejay’s face. Any credibility he once had, had been irreparably damaged. His sarcastic response did nothing to address the faithlessness she felt toward him. It was an insensitive attempt to obscure the immense distrust that he harbored for her in his heart.

“Now see, that’s the advantage I have living under two personalities. You, my wife, will be Mrs.
