The young FBI analyst didnât bother to knock this time. He threw open the door and rushed in. âSir, you need to see this.â
Thomas Johnson was on the phone and held up a hand to try and calm the analyst while he finished the call.
Tyler hopped from one foot to the other, getting more and more agitated. âSir, this is important.â
Johnson nodded and pointed to the chair in front of his desk while he carried on with his phone call. âYesâ¦I agreeâ¦I think it would be in all our interests if weââ
Tyler couldnât wait any longer. âSIR, please.â
Johnson looked at the young man. This wasnât like him. He was normally quiet and didnât like to interrupt. âI have to go, somethingâs come up.â He put the phone on its cradle. âWhat is it, Robert?â
Tyler placed several sheets of paper on the desk. âItâs the motel shootout, sir.â
âWhat have you found?â
âYou remember we decided to ask the local sheriff to swing by the Quinn ranch to ask if she had seen Sinclair?â
âYes, I remember. I also said donât spend too long on this.â
âWell, I wanted to chase them up, so I phoned again this morning. They sent a deputy over there yesterday.â
âWhat did he find out?â
âThatâs the thing, sir. They havenât heard from him in over twenty-four hours.â
âHave they asked Quinn if sheâs seen him?â
âThey tried to, but thereâs no one at the ranch.â
Johnson got the feeling that Tyler might be on to something. There were too many coincidences and unexplained events. The last thing he wanted was his bosses asking him why he hadnât followed it up. âI want you to get all of the data youâve found into a file so we can track this.â
âYes, sir. But thatâs not all.â
Johnson sat forward in his seat. âYouâve got more?â
Tyler passed over another sheet of paper. There was a photo in the top left-hand corner and the name Liam Quinn. âThatâs Josephine Quinnâs husband. He was reported missing at sea, with his children, over a month ago.â
âWhy is the Bureau looking at this?â
âQuinn is the CEO of a defence company. Letâs just say they have some pretty high-profile friends in Washington.â
âDo we have any leads as to what happened to them?â
Tyler produced a fresh sheet from the printer. âWe donât know what happened, but this has just come in. A body has been found, washed-up on the beach in Galveston. Looks like itâs him.â
Johnson read the report. This was shaping up to be the kind of job that warranted an investigation into why things hadnât been spotted earlier, the kind of investigation that ended with a scapegoat having to resign. He wasnât going to be that scapegoat. âGet in touch with Halloran; heâs down there. Tell him to get to the beach and see what he can find out.â
âYes, sir.â Tyler stood up and left the office, closing the door behind him.
