Even though both of these are tabs, and we wanted to make them recognizable as tabs, we made them very obviously visually distinctive, as different from each other as we could. This helped us ensure that our users understood that, even though both were tabs, they were very different kinds of tabs.

Takeaway Points

People are good at recognizing user interface elements, so user interface elements don’t all need to look exactly the same.

Things that do look similar need to do exactly the same thing, in exactly the same way, since people will try to apply their existing mental models to it.
