Chapter 45

The Failed Potion

When they're sated, the woman takes them to the room they'll spend the night in. It's empty, but for the straw mats covered with wool blankets sitting on a raised platform. The boys fall asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows, but Ali can't. She's bone tired, but her heart is heavy and her head full of worries, so sleep fails her. She listens to the regular breaths of the boys and wishes she could sleep like them. But she can't.

This is likely the last night they'll spend together. Tomorrow morning, they'll be each assigned to their jobs, whatever they are. The boys will go their way, and she'll go hers. All alone.

That shouldn't scare her since she's used to being alone, but it does. She's never been without the boys since she ran away to Kronstadt; they are her family now.

But even worse, she's not ready. Ali knows that she's a lousy witch.

Her mind reading isn't too bad, and she can usually foretell the weather. But, try as she might, she can't gather storm clouds and summon rain to save her life, let alone target lightning. And, despite her efforts, her potions leave a lot to be desired. As for her incantations, they're a joke.

"I haven't laughed so hard in ages," Smaranda said, wiping her eyes, looking at an indignant Gigi. The cat's angry eyes threatened a terrible death, but her ears flopped to her chin, and her tail was all but gone. "What on earth did you do to her?"

"I tried to turn her into a rabbit."

"What did you use?"

"Father's potion. And the Transformatio Cunniculum incantation.”

"Which potion is that?" Smaranda asked.

"This one," Ali said, showing her Father's grimoire.

Three sprigs of wilted lavender

Two tablespoons of dried mandrake root

A cup of fresh carrot juice

One black rabbit foot from the back

One cat hair from the tail of the cat you want to transform

One small piece of moonstone
