Chapter 7

For days, Hexaniys worked diligently with the Lich Sentinel and Arch Lich to create bylaws for the Demonic Arcani. Eduard was at his side the entire time, and at night they shared several kisses. Afterward, Hexaniys slept soundly. He had never been as rested. The aching in his belly was history too, as the Darays kept him constantly full.

His daggers—along with Sashati’s and Diyarta’s—arrived from D’Vaire, and Alaric inscribed their names on them to keep the blades from harming them. Hexaniys learned from Trystan D’Vaire’s books that Albrecht’s necromancer and her mate had decapitated Arvandus with his weapon while they forced the sentinel to watch. It was horrific, and although Hexaniys was familiar with violence, he couldn’t understand it.

The DNA tests were complete, and they proved that the early demonic explorers hadn’t lied. Two Acwellan elves had survived and were part of the same race as Hexaniys. That was comforting to him and proved the demons could thrive in their new home. The men and women that Hexaniys was called to lead were certainly enjoying Council life.

Diyarta brought tales of shopping expeditions, restaurant excursions, and gatherings in the lounges that were plentiful in the Daray Sentinel Complex. It was a relief to Hexaniys, and proof that he hadn’t acted selfishly in his desire to escape the demonic realm.

Sorcery D’Vaire agreed to investigate the blood samples provided to see if they could determine why the demons lacked magic but were unable to offer any promise of a solution. They were unfamiliar with demons, and so were Hexaniys and the survivors of his race.

What Sorcery D’Vaire could tell them was that they had roughly the same nearly non-existent power as the Acwellan, and that Chander continued to be an unexplained anomaly. As for Hexaniys’s fear that the demons might perish eventually, it appeared to be unfounded.

“I think we’re nearly done with these bylaws,” Eduard murmured.

“Thank Fate, my eyes are nearly crossed,” Sashati teased. The soon-to-be praetor had fully immersed himself in the activities of the Daray household, and Hexaniys was grateful to add him to his collection of new friends.

“There is one last thing we haven’t discussed about the Acwellan,” Chander said. “I was waiting for you to bring it up, but since you haven’t, we should address it. You haven’t talked to Chieftain Acwellan much, and always on the phone, so maybe you’ll feel more comfortable discussing it with me first.”

“What is the issue?” Hexaniys asked.

“Their demonic blood—despite their lack of power—gives them the ability to separate the soul link of two mates who aren’t bound by blood or bite,” Chander replied.

“It’s the only thing I’ve learned that I find impossible to believe,” Hexaniys confided.

“The Council cherishes matebonds, but we also understand that no one is perfect, which includes Fate,” Chander said. “That’s why we have separation agreements, but those are just pieces of paper that can be shredded the minute two people decide they want to try again. I should know; I had one myself once. What we’d prefer
