Torstensson held court in a beehive-shaped house in Kaaden probably confiscated from a member of the city council or a wealthy merchant. The place was teeming with uniforms waiting for their chance to speak with the general.
Gustav and his master had to wait for their turn, but Gustav didn't care. The rooms were warm, and they were offered honey-sweetened pastries.
Martin frowned as Gustav wolfed down enough for both of them.
"Perhaps I should reward you with sweets after your lessons in the future, eh? You might remember more about Epicurusâ theory of the quadruple remedy. What is the theory called?" As usual, Martin turned their waiting time into a lesson.
"Tetrapharmakon," Gustav replied with a full mouth and giving a silly curtsy.
"Youâre improving, but don't push it. Man is a child to God, just as a boy is to a man."
Gustav could not get his head around this cryptic saying.
"Who is that quote from?" the surgeon raised his eyebrows.
"Um â¦" Now he had him. Pride comes before the fall. Those darn honey cakes.
"Should I repeat it in Greek to give you a hint?"
A Greek, then. Not that that helped much. He had a hard time distinguishing the Greek philosophers from the Roman ones. Not to mention the Greeks whose teachings had been passed on second-hand by Romans. "No, no. Wait, I â¦"
"Heraclitus, Master Feldsher," Torstensson said, appearing at the door of his conference room. "But I prefer this quote from him: 'War is the father of all, king of all. It makes some into gods, others into men, some into slaves, and sets others free.'"
"You surprise me again and again, Field Marshal."
They followed the Swede into his makeshift overheated office, decorated in shades of red and lined with thick carpets.
When I tell Anna that one of the most powerful military leaders in the world saved me from a test question, she will never believe me.
"I'm sure, General, that you didn't call us here to talk about ancient philosophers." Martin skipped right over polite chit-chat.
"Certainly not," a female voice said. A finely dressed woman stepped into the dim light.
"Countess de la Gardie." Gustav felt his master's hand on his back, an unmistakable hint for him to bow.
The countess had a six-year-old boy by the hand. He asked her something in Swedish. She replied kindly and translated, "Gustav Adolf wants to know which of you is the healer and whether you have left him any honey cookies."
Torstensson's son, Gustav realized. He must have been named after the fallen Swedish king, too. It hadnât even occurred to him that the general might be traveling with his family just like the ordinary soldiers.
"Weâre both healers, Gustav Adolf, and unfortunately my apprentice ate all the cookies."
With a shrug of his shoulders, Gustav tried a half-hearted apology with the boy. How was he supposed to know the general's son would want some?
"How good is your German, Gustav Adolf?" Martin asked the boy.
He hid behind his mother's skirt. Gustav gave him an understanding look. He experienced first-hand how exhausting his master's questioning was every single day.
