There is no escape from the morning sunlight bouncing off the smoldering sand beneath my curled up body. The heat scorches my arms, scattering redness across my exposed skin, and leaving blisters from the sun’s wrath. Apollo and I are friends, yet in this moment, I believe him and his sun to be my enemy.

Blearily, I open my eyes, accepting today and the agony it entails. I take several seconds to acclimate to my surroundings, to blink away the fatigue and pain until Artemis’s form comes into view. She sits up, knees pressing against her chest and arms. She glances between my cage and my quickly burning skin.

“I always said you were too pale,” she says as a morning greeting.

“When we get out of here, I will try to change that.”

She smiles, but the expression shows her mirthless defeat. We have ridden together across centuries, and I have never witnessed her submit to terrible circumstances before. Not when we fought the Echidna, or when rumblings of Kronos’s return echoed through the woods. Artemis has always been a victor, but now on an unmapped island with magic restricting us, Artemis accepts her new role as a prisoner.

I refuse to let her surrender her strength.

“Have you seen Calypso or Hecate?” I ask, recalling the previous night.

She shakes her head. “While you were sleeping, I asked the nymphs about them. They said they never physically see Hecate, but Calypso visits once a week. Most of the time, she brings food.”

I might get food once a week. I swallow a newfound lump in my throat, the dryness on my tongue more noticeable than ever. And water? I want to ask. Will I get water, or will Calypso let me dehydrate? I do not say it aloud, though.

With one goal in mind, I stammer. “Then you have to go now.”

Her brows crinkle together with concern. “The cage is magic restricted, you know this. Has all the sun burned away your memory?”

I whisper, just in case Calypso is in hearing range. “Hecate was here last night while the rest of you slept. She didn’t finish charming your cage. I do not think she will make the same mistake twice, so now is your only chance.”

Realization quickly dawns on Artemis.

“What did you do?”

“You can open those bars and swim to Poseidon. You can escape and bring back help.” A hopeful, delirious smile consumes my face. “But I’d be quick. There’s still some magic on those bars, and they won’t be easy to bend.”

“But not impossible,” Artemis murmurs.

I repeat. “But not impossible.”

“You sneaky genius.” Artemis huffs out a laugh. Just as quickly as her joy appears, it leaves. “You can’t swim all the way to Poseidon’s castle with me. You wouldn’t survive the trip.”

“I know,” I say. “And Hecate charmed my cell last night. I have to stay, but you have to go.”

“But,” she says, never finishing the sentence aloud.

I know her question all the same.

But what if you die?

“Then, the last act I did in this world was save my goddess from harm.
