“I cannot fucking believe it? How could you take out not one but two skins in less than a fortnight? Dammit, I thought you liked the girl,” Rick fumed.

Mitch winced, “Shit Rick, I know you’re competitive, but I didn’t realize breaking your record of two in a month would be such a problem.”

Rick glared at him, “Not fucking funny, Mitch. I am not in the mood for your bullshit.”

Mitch shrugged apologetically, “Sorry. But of course, it wasn’t bloody intentional and yes, I like Alexa and no, I didn’t deliberately set out to blow the budget. The op was an occupational hazard you and I have been through more times than I can count. The racing accident was umm unfortunate.”

“Unfortunate?” gasped Rick. “Was it fucking necessary to give her, or you, the opportunity to waste a perfectly formed and hideously expensive body in such a spectacular disaster?”

Mitch scratched the back of his head looking very much like he wanted to be somewhere else. “But we agreed the adrenaline buzz was working well.”

“So, it’s just me who sees a difference between going around a track with an instructor watching every move and an uncontrollable race between inexperienced drivers in over-powered vehicles?”

Mitch grimaced as Rick ground his teeth, “Because if my Special Projects team lead cannot perform a simple risk assessment then I’m questioning his suitability for the role.”

Mitch flinched, “It wasn’t supposed to happen. Everything was within acceptable risk parameters until Ted got called away and his offsider decided to finish the day with a race. Alexa hit the starting grid before I could get to her and refused to come back in.”

Rick just glared at him as he leaned on his desk, hands clenched into tight fists.

“I’m not sure what you want me to say, Rick. Obviously, the outcome was regrettable and I won’t take Alexa racing again. Apart from anything else, it was fucking nasty watching the car go up in flames when it hit the wall at 150 plus. What else do you want from me?” he demanded in frustration.

Rick heaved a deep sigh and fell back in his chair—and at last waved Mitch to take a seat which he dropped into with obvious relief.

Mitch kept quiet, waiting for Rick to continue. As the silence lengthened, he muttered, “Don’t suppose there’s any chance of a drink is there? I could truly use one.”

Rick studied Mitch and realized how shaken he was from the whole experience, sitting and twisting his watch back and forth on his wrist in suppressed agitation. He was paler than normal with dark shadows under his eyes. Even when you knew resurrection was only a matter of time and money, watching someone you cared about die was disturbing.

Rick gave Mitch a faint smile and leaned down to his bottom drawer to pull out the bourbon he kept on hand, along with his own whiskey and two heavy tumblers. He poured a hefty belt of bourbon into a glass and pushed it across the desk to Mitch—then shoved the bottle over.
